Hayden Howard, who lives in Ohio, was diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia (FA) in 2014 at the age of 11. She explains how staying positive, social, and proactive about her health helps her navigate the challenges of FA.

I would say, for a mindset, I like to stay positive. But every day sucks. Rare diseases suck — especially when it comes to alarmingly more physical and progressive ones. But I do like to always remind myself that things can always be worse.

Just because I have FA, it doesn’t mean that my life is over. I always like to stay social as well. I make friends everywhere I go.

When it comes to my treatments, it’s better to stay on top of things and just really prioritize my health so there’s no issues down the road.
