• Winter weather and FA

Posted by ChristinaC on November 5, 2025 at 11:37 am

Now that the cold and winter months are approaching, our FA symptoms may become more pronounced and worsen.

For example, when it is freezing outside, my joints and bones get stiff in the cold, and that causes my body extra stress. I have to slow everything down and take extra precautions when moving around and performing daily acts of living.

Depending on where you live, how do you manage your symptoms during the cold season?

I can relate to this. I live in NY and I am just so tired of the winter, cold temps and snow. My body just never feels warm, stiff muscles. I don’t know if there’s anything I can do about it but try to keep warm as best as I can. Hot shower or bath helps me get the blood pressure moving. I also like to use a heating pad on my legs when I’m watching tv or on the computer

I use a heating pad too on my legs and feet, and it does wonders!

My wife uses a power wheelchair. I installed a power port like the ones in cars. It has come in extremely handy. For when it’s cold out I can plug an electric automotive blanket and as long we keep it on low it will last for several hours before it starts to drain the batteries. I wrap it around her legs and lap with her hands underneath. She keeps nice and toasty……even when it gets below zero and everyone else is freezing .

She also uses it to plug her electric fishing pole in. …And have used it to light up her chair with decorative lights for different holidays . And the obvious….to charge phones if needed.

I like the electric automotive blanket idea for myself and am going to try it!

Now that warmer months are approaching, do your symptoms change? If so, how do you adapt and manage these changes?
