When it comes to living with FA, unfortunately, accidents (trips and falls are prone to happen due to loss of balance and coordination.

I recently fell walking up the ramp in my home with my scooter, and I sprained my ankle and also tore ligaments in my ankle. It is by far my worst accident and injury from falling. I have an air cast and a boot to wear for a week while I recover.

What has been your worst injury living with FA? What was the recovery process like?

Well, my worst injury was last year when I fell inside my house and sprained my ankle. I couldn’t weight bear on it so I needed help to get up. Then I was in a standard w/c for about 3 weeks, wearing the boot and air cast and using a 4 wheeled walker some. It made ADLs really difficult. Lots of icing, elevation and Advil helped. I did my own therapy because I’m terribly stubborn and basically refuse to admit I need help or advice (I was an OT for years). I Have full range of motion in the ankle but with extreme dorsi-flexion while weight bearing it still can hurt and I have pain if I walk barefoot much.

      Hi Cathy!

I am so sorry that this happened to you and I am sorry to hear about how long the recovery process took. Injuries can be a scary thing, and it could take awhile to gain confidence back. But I am impressed that you did your own therapy! It seems like you have the knowledge and confidence to overcome this kind of thing!

Oof, I can relate. My worst was a fall in the bathroom, I hit my head on the tub and ended up with a mild concussion and a fractured wrist. Recovery took weeks, and the wrist still gets stiff now and then. I use grab bars and a shower chair now, and honestly, they’ve made a huge difference. It’s frustrating, but I’ve learned to plan ahead to avoid those kinds of accidents again.

        Hi Nate,

I am so sorry to hear you went through this injury! I use grab bars and a shower chair as modifications too, and it helps me! I am glad you found what works best for you.

Two weeks ago, I had a major fall again, and I ended up spraining and tearing ligaments in the same ankle. Unfortunately, this accident was much worse, and it was a longer recovery process.

I was and still am feeling so mentally and physically defeated from this happening so close together.

How do you manage the heavy feeling of defeat due to living with FA?
