Does using a rollator hinder you from visiting other people’s homes?
Using a rollator is designed to help us walk safely.
I mostly use mine in my own home, so I feel comfortable and confident with it.
While a rollator is beneficial, there can also be downsides- like being in someone else’s home with your rollator and trying to navigate the unfamiliarity of their bathroom, their furniture, and doorways.
Does using a rollator hinder you from visiting other people’s homes? Has it cut down on your social activities?
Do you have any tips, thoughts, or advice when you find yourself in this situation?

I think using a rollator would help me feel comfortable visiting my friends houses more. I always say “come to my house” because I’m familiar with my walls to stumble and lean on if need be. I think if I brought my rollator with me more, I’d be willing to go more places. The biggest issue is getting it out and into my car.

You should! Using your rollator more outside of your home is encouraging and it’s also a great way to raise awareness if you are out in public as well!

I agree. Every time I go out in public with my walker, someone asks what happened. Then I get to explain FA.

My wife just turned 50 . She was diagnosed at 12 and started in a wheelchair when she became pregnant at 20…..
It always baffled me and infuriated me that not a single person (family included) in her life ever made their homes wheelchair accessible, yet they all expect her to come visit them!!??…. and the only one to ever come visit her was a high school teacher she had and he made it a point to come a couple times a year and spent the day with us. Sadly he past away a few years ago.
Anyone else experience anything like this?

I do! It seems like my husband and I are always expected to travel places to see people because they think I can manage since I travel other places. Whether I travel local or at a distance, it still takes a toll, and a lot of planning around rest goes into it. A lot of people don’t understand how much disability factors into travelling.

Should add also…the extreme risk and extra expenses that go with it….our wheelchair lift van is 26 years old…what if we break down? Its not just a tow, its finding someone to come get my wife that can haul a wheelchair BEFORE the tow truck gets there then pay the ones who pick up my wife . Double whammy!!
Our van at best only gets 15 mpg when most people’s car get twice that. Since we have been forced to live in our camper we dont get to choose what we drive. We have to have something that can pull the camper.
When you live on almost nothing, gas is a major expense to go anywhere.
Seems others just cant grasp simple common sense or basic math.

It doesn’t help that travelling is so so expensive these days due to the increase in gas prices!
