Even though the holidays are a season of celebration, and connection, they can also be a challenging time for many. Between the business of gatherings and festive activities, it’s easy to overlook those who may be struggling. For some, the holidays can bring feelings of loneliness, stress, or even grief.

I wanted to check in on our FA Community. How are you doing with the holiday season?

    Hi Christina,
I’m finding it tough this winter, not only with the stress that Christmas brings but also with the dark nights and the shorter days, my internal clock is having difficulty getting used to the weather changes.
My FA has given me progressive hearing loss, so im having trouble hearing low frequency sounds, which is most voices in my orbit. I’m watching people talking to each other or llaughing about something, but i feel like im on the outside as i cant hear them. It has left me feeling isolated and lonely, thinking that they would be just fine without my presence.
Sorry if you feel like i have just unloaded on you, but i just felt like i needed to tell someone or else it would eat me up inside.

      Hi Niamh!

No need to apologize that’s what the forums are here for!

I’m sorry you are feeling this way and that feel lonely and isolated. Do you have any close friends or family members to talk to? Or do you have any close friends with FA to confide into? It helps me have a close friend with FA who understands exactly how we are feeling and are going through.

Sadly no, I live in a very rural area. I used to be able to drive into town to see friends/family whenever, but unfortunately after a car accident, my drivers license was reviewed and removed from me. Any friends that i had have slowly continued on with their lives/forgetten about me, so i havent anyone to talk to and FA isnt that common in surrounding areas, so i have noone who can relate.

I am sorry to hear that. Luckily the FA Community has a strong online prescense such as here with BioNews, or the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA). I am also a FARA Ambassador, and it’s a great way to connect with patients from all over. Anyone can join, and they are still accepting applications! Here’s information to learn more and apply: https://www.curefa.org/get-involved/ambassador-program-overview/

Let me know if I can help you get in touch with someone in any way!
