As a full-time wheelchair user, it’s important for me to remain as independent as possible. I think all FAers feel the same way!

One activity that’s pretty difficult for me is getting dressed. When it comes to tying a tie or buttoning small buttons, I always ask for someone else’s help.
Asking for help is never a bad thing, but do you have any tips on getting dressed as independently as possible?

I avoid clothing that has buttons or laces. When the situation demands something nicer than t-shirt and shorts, I get help from my wife. My main advice for getting dressed is use simple clothes and do it on the floor. Getting dressed on the floor means I have to practice getting down from my wheelchair and climbing back on, which is a workout. Literally. I train this task. I might do 10-30 reps a day. I own the floor!

You do a lot of stuff on the floor. That sounds weird. But I really admire that.
Are your floors hard or carpeted?

Don’t hurry-whatever you do, Don’t get dressed in the chair, don’t be proud and not ask for help, be prepared to struggle (it’s not really a big deal)

I get dressed on my bed when I get out of the shower.
