  • What assistive equipment or mobility aids help you manage living with FA?

A common symptom of FA is experiencing the loss of balance, which causes trouble walking because there is damage to nerve cells that are needed to coordinate movement.

A number of mobility aids and other adaptation tools are available to make daily life easier. Sometimes, people can use more than one mobility aid depending on the situation and what works best for them and their symptoms.

For example, I use my walker inside my home because I feel safe and comfortable when walking short distances. When I am out in public, I use my scooter because I factor in long distances, my fatigue, and I am unsure how the terrain would be if I were to walk.

Do you have certain mobility aid(s) that you use? What works best for you?

I use the nitro walker when going to public places where there is not a ton of walking. I can take sit breaks if I need to in the walker. I have a wheelchair/walker for when I’m going to do a lot of walking like going to Nashville or on a cruise so I can put it in wheelchair mode and get pushed.

What makes a nitro walker different from a regular walker?

The nitro walker is designed to sit while being stopped. You can get pushed in it, but you have to lift your legs sideways for someone to push you and hold them up to avoid touching the ground. My walker wheelchair is designed as a wheelchair that you can sit in without your feet touching the ground and someone can easily push me. You can push the seat down and it goes into a walker. It’s called the motion 2.1.

Thank you! This all sounds amazing and I am definitely going to look into it! Right now, I have a standard walker and it is only to be used for that, and doesn’t transform into a seat to be pushed around. My fatigue and myself would love that option!
