Hi all! I do not have cardiomyopathy but I my heart rate will go into the 150s when resting sometimes and I feel lethargic when it happens. I think it all started after I had covid last year. When I look back over the years, I have had chest pain when I’m in a rush, get up too fast in the middle of the night, or after any alcohol. Doctors do not know if it is FA related. The doctors in Oklahoma I go to do not know much about FA either. Has anyone else experienced this?

If you haven’t tried….try reaching out to a good FA neurologist somewhere else that could possibly point you in the direction of someone close to you.

We use a Dr. Joseph Hoyle at the ohio state university Wexner medical center and he and his team are exceptional.

As far as the racing heart and getting up too fast. From people I’ve talked with and even I’ve experienced these both, it seems to be a common thing as you age , disability or not. Its if it happens frequently is when you should worry, in my opinion. A lot of falls from the elderly occur because they get up too fast without holding on to something.

Even when I was young and heavily involved in martial arts and was in exceptional health I experienced the racing heart.

The chest pain thing though , is something not to ignore….even if it turns out to not be anything serious which often isnt anything serious. Stress can cause it….but still get it checked out right away.

I’m not a dr though and this is just my opinion from what I’ve learned from talking to people and their experiences as well as my own.

Its seems to be a common theme as you get older to have these conversations with people more often as you start to experience all the aches , pains and various(snap, crackle, and pop. Lol) noises accosiated with aging.

Do you drink a lot of caffeine? Pop, coffee, tea etc.? That can cause problems like these. I know I stopped drinking pop altogether and I’ve noticed a huge difference , I feel much better .

I’ve never eaten much sweets as an adult but I can see how too much sugar could cause problems as well.

I drink a lot of caffeine (3-4 cups of coffee) per day, and sometimes I also experience heart racing when I get up too quickly, or get fatigued when walking long periods of time. I woner if this is FA related or caffeine related.

I drink coffee every morning so I am sure that contributes to it. I think stress definitely plays a role in the heart racing spells. I’ve been sick with covid twice and noro-virus in the past 8 months so I am sure that added stress to my body. I will take your advice and talk to an FA neurologist!

I feel like stress can trigger a lot of things!

Sorry you were sick so many times in the past 8 months!

When i had my business I would often work extremely long hours ….like 48 to 60….I found very quickly that caffeine seriously slowed me down. What worked better for me was to occasionally eat something that I could eat and work at the same time like carrots , apples , banana, etc.

After one of my extremely long work hours I had a black belt meeting and I was already wore out so I made the huge mistake of grabbing a cup of coffee on the way in order to wake me up. I hadnt had any caffeine at all in a couple of years. As we were working out I thought my heart was going to pound itself right out of my chest. On top of that I couldn’t stop shaking. I had to bow out and go home.

Caffeine is an incredibly powerful drug that most people overlook.

Eating snacks and the right protein is just as helpful!
